About a month ago, in response to a fun article on the Galavanting website, I wrote that I wanted to create my own, crowd-sourced list of the hunkiest men in travel. Well, I am happy to say the results are in! And there are some pretty good names and faces to add to the original Galavanting list.
So now, in no particular order, I present you some of the hot men in travel writing today. These were submitted by women and men via comments on the original post and via secret ballot over e-mail and Twitter DMs. If you’ve got a beef with any of the ones listed – or simply want to give props to someone who didn’t get nominated – feel free to comment below!
James Sturz has written for a slew of magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times, Saveur, Condé Nast Traveler, and just about any other big name publication you can think of. He is also the author of Sasso, a novel set in Italy. James has taught travel writing classes for Mediabistro.com, which is where several of those who nominated him met him in person, thereby vouching for his inclusion on this list.
Brett Rounsaville of AMTrekker got a nod by none other than Ms. Galavanting TBEXer Kim Mance. Having seen Brett’s amusing video that he sent to TBEX, I can concur with that choice. If you haven’t checked out Brett’s site, it’s all about completing items on his bucket list, such as participating in a Civil War re-enactment and seeing a live taping of the Colbert Report. Here, he crosses two things off his list: appearing on a talk show and firing Donald Trump:
Gadling is one of the most popular travel sites on the web, so it’s no surprise that one of their own made this list. Tom Johansmeyer averages about three posts per day on the Gadling website, including articles on North Korea, and he also writes for Cigar Reader and Luxist. According to this recent interview of Tom on the blog Liberate Laura, Tom also served in the U.S. Army’s 2nd Infantry Division. A military man turned travel writer? Yes, please.
Andrew Evans is another travel writer associated with Gadling. But he is probably best known as the guy who took a Bus to Antarctica. It was a thrill to read his posts on Twitter (at Bus2Antarctica and aeevans) during his 10 week trek and now you can read the whole story in National Geographic Traveler. It’s not often that you hear about travel feats such as Andrew’s these days, which makes his writing – and him – all the more alluring. Also be sure to have a look at Andrew’s website: it’s one of the best you’ll ever see.
Quite a number of ladies, as well as a few guys, tapped Zach Everson for the hot men of travel writing list. You may have seen Zach’s work in BlackBook, in which he sported oh-so-sexy silk pajamas, or on the Lodgings Guide for Uptake, in which he donned a fluffy spa robe while drinking martinis (see pic at left). While Zach’s work is all over the place, including on Louisville.com, where he is Editor-in-Chief, his writing is spot-on, never failing to be engaging or amusing.
Last but not least on this list is Spencer Spellman, also an Uptake alum and the man behind the Traveling Philosopher. Spencer garnered a number of votes from both sexes, who cited his southern accent as one of his sexiest traits. But I’d also have to mention his romantic side, which is evident in his recent travel bucket list on which he lists one of his desires as “Take a hot balloon ride…at sunset…while making out with a significant other..in Africa.” Pretty hot, Spencer.
And, the rest of the best (they each got one nomination):

Posted by Robbin G | September 7, 2010, 5:08 pmFun read! Who knew there were so many hotties writing about travel? Still, this doesn’t seem any more scientific than the original poll. What about using a free online poll like Survey Monkey or Poll Daddy so we can see the results? Maybe for the ladies of travel version!
Posted by LeslieTravel | September 10, 2010, 3:16 pmLeslie – you are so right about the list not being scientific. I just took noms from people either in comments or twitter DMs. While I think a free poll would be cool, I am reluctant to turn this “contest” into something with measurable data – I’d hate for feelings to be hurt.
That said, I’d be delighted to work with you on a new men’s and/or women’s poll. Maybe the people who want to be considered could throw their names in the ring then we could go from there. Hmmm…any other ideas??
Posted by Melanie | September 10, 2010, 5:54 pmSounds like fun! I’m a trained market researcher, so I guess that explains why I’m a stickler about the data
I’d love to collaborate on a travel poll (whether “hot” or not).
Posted by LeslieTravel | September 10, 2010, 6:59 pmCan we get a calendar project going on it? LOL

Posted by Michelle | September 27, 2010, 1:33 pmHow did you get nominated? Where was my nomination for this?
Quite an interesting topic for travel! Is there one for the women too?
Posted by Jeremy B | October 4, 2010, 3:08 pmJeremy…there was a call for nominations on this blog and Twitter. Sorry you missed out! As far as one of these lists for women, feel free to crowdsource one for your blog
Posted by Melanie | October 5, 2010, 7:32 amHow did I never comment on this? And why did it show up in a search I did for my own name in google? Just another random day in my world. Anyway, woot to Spencer and Tom as they are the only two I have met in person and I can attest to the fact they are great guys!!
